Explanation of Temae
Hanashomou (Requesting the Flowers)
Part 1- Picture captions

  1. Prepare the flower tray
  2. Display the vase at the alcove of the main seat
  3. The entering guests veiw the flowers
  4. Place down the flower tray, open the fusuma door
  5. Take hold of the flower tray
  6. Stand with the right knee
  7. Advance to the foot (of the tatami) in front of the alcove
  8. Sitting down, place down the flower tray
  9. At the host’s entrance, request (the guest to arrange the flowers)
  10. The guests accepts the host’s request
  11. The guests agree upon (who should arrange the flowers)
  12. The guest who will arrange the flowers advances to the alcove, and veiws the flowers
  13. Choose which flowers
  14. Adjust the length (of the flower’s stems)
  15. Make a plan for the flowers
  16. Ascend up into the alcove and arrange the flowers
  17. The host gives the greeting, “Douzo, omizu wo”
  18. The guest gives a light bow
  19. Adjust the flowers on top of the flower tray
  20. The host advances to the front of the alcove, and veiws the flowers
  21. The guest who arranged the flowers gives the greeting, “onaoshi no ue, omizu wo”
  22. Hold the hanamizutsugi (flower watering pot)
  23. Set the the chakin against the mouth of the hanamizutsugi
  24. Pour water
  25. Place the hanamizutsugi on the flower tray
  26. Turn the knife’s blade from facing the outside to the inside
  27. Return to the mizuya, holding the flower tray
  28. The guests and host give a communal bow
  29. One by one veiw the flowers, starting with the guest of honour
  30. Draw out the flowers, wrap them in kaishi, and place them in the corner of the alcove

10.連客は亭主の所望を受ける

16.床に上がり、花を入れる
17.亭主は「どうぞ、お水を」と挨拶する
18.客は軽く合釈する
19.花台の上の花を整える

21.花を入れた客は「お直しの上、お水を」と挨拶する
22.花水次を持つ
23.茶巾を花水次の口に当て
24.水を注ぐ
25.花水次を花台に置く
26.小刀の刃を内側から外側に向けかえる
27.花台を持って水屋にさがる
28.主客総礼をする
29.上客から一人ずつ花を拝見する
30.花を抜き、懐紙で包み、床の隅に置く
